On Friendship Day

Today is the 1st sunday of August. What is so special about today? Well, plenty. On this very day, Hannibal crossed the Alps with his army of elephants in the Second Punic War, and defeated a numerically strong Roman army. Its also the day that the Tower underground station, the first of its kind, was opened... So, historically, and technologically, it is a day of immense significance. however, what we popularly remember today is as International Friendship Day.

International Friendship Day celebrations take place on the first Sunday of August every year. The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries. this day people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Exchange of Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands is a popular tradition of this occasion..
(From wikipedia).

However, I, being me, am totally against this concept. Firstly, celebrating it is like cutting a hole in your pockets. the money wasted is enormous! since morning, i have had SMS's from friends wishing me a happy friendship day. i have had 154 of them. if i had replied to all of them, then, assuming that each SMS costs 1 rs, and 3 minutes to type, 154rs and 7 and half hours of my precious time would have been wasted. Just imagine how much the resources the country must be wasting on this one day! we could easily utilise that time and money for other creative and interesting things.

Leave alone the issue of money. I am extremely frugal, and will think twice before SMSing on how to fit the text in 1 page, leave alone send 154 messages. But thats my problem!

I also do not see the point of celebrating friendship day. I mean, nearly everyday, we are with our friends for half a day! even if we are not, we meet them after a few days, weeks, months or years! the joy of such experiences goes on rising exponentially with time spent apart. For me, two people having a smile on the face, knowing that the other one is thinking of you, is good enough.

No one has placed restrictions on us on contacting our friends. we are free to call them up any time, anywhere, with or without reason, just because we feel like doing it. We do that nearly every day! Atleast I do. now why celebrate a day, when you remind your friends what you do! they know it... SMS, email and all are crap var-varchya goshti... they are materialistic, and so in my opinion, unnecessary.

Why celebrate or pretend to celebrate ONE day with your friends, by sending emails, mesages and doing what not, when you could actually cherish and enjoy your friendship for all 365 days, all your life!

As they say, sometimes, actions speak louder than words. and definitely than the words in Sms's emails and all that junk..
